Sericulture: The women folk of Majuli have the skill of weaving to prepare their minimum requirement of cloth item themselves. According to the official information, nearly 6301 families have been found engaged in rearing Endi, Muga and silk cocoon domestically. Every family have at least one weaver to weave cloth for their social use. In this respect the mention may be made of the weaving skill of the women of the Missing and the Deori community living in Majuli. Horticulture: Some examples of types of such crops are banana pineapple, arcanut, black pepper, Assam lemon, turmeric and ginger. Most of these horticultural crops do not go beyond home consumption and the local market. Livestock: Farmers rear cattle, buffalo, goat and pigs. The cattle density is very high in Majuli at four per household. Due to abundance availability of grassland and open fields, one can get the purest and very high quality of milk at Majuli. Pig is next in importance. Its density is worked out at more than one per household. More than one third of the pig population seems to be cross breeds. Goats and buffaloes, in that order, are other types of animals that farmers of Majuli rear. Piggery: Piggery has been mainly contained to the Tribal inhabitants of Majuli. Trading is confined to local market only. Near about 34,030 families are concerned with the pig farming. Pisciculture: Pisciculture is another main source of livelihood for the Majulians. There are only two government and 62 private fisheries in the subdivision. It works out 389.3 kg per head. The per capita production of this size is too high to be consumed within the subdivision. |
