Demographic Profile

Majuli is one sub-division under Jorhat district of Assam. For administrative purpose, the subdivision has been divided into three Mouzas/ Revenue blocks. The population of Majuli rose from 35,000 in 1901 to 1.35 lakh in 1991 and to 1.52 lakh in 1996. It recorded a growth of 1.8 % per annum during 1971 to 1991 and 2.4 % per annum during 1991-1996. There are 923 female per 1000 male population in Majuli in 1991. Majuli is predominantly a tribal subdivision, which has been declared as Scheduled tribe population constituted 42.2 % of the its population in 1991. Scheduled caste population comprised another 14.0 % of the Majuli inhabitants in the same year. In other words, SC and ST population together accounted for more than half (56.2%) of Majuli’s total inhabitants.

Occupation Pattern

Agriculture is the main source of livelihood of the people of Majuli. Out of the total population of 153362 according to the 2001 census, a number of 45722 comprising 29.81 percent of the total population constitute the total workforce of which 80.85 percent belongs to the farmers and another 2.05 percent agricultural labourer. As can be observed from table, people engaged in other occupation is very low.
