Floristic Biodiversity

Floristic bio-diversity includes mainly four types of flora viz. phytoplankton, herbs, shrubs and trees. A good number of plank-tonic species are available in the inner sky or locally known as 'beel', which are important natural resources of the island. Because these phytoplankton’s reflect the availability of fish species in the wetland or 'beel's. Diversity of herbaceous species is very high in the island. It includes grasses, sedges, legumes, non legumes and terrestrial, many aquatic pteridophytes as well. The numbers of aquatic weeds are abundant in the island. More than 200 species of herbs are available in the island. Though there is no any established forest in the island a fairly good number of tree species are found to be present in the island. Bombax cebia and Lagrestomia indica are found to be dominant among tree community. Shrub species are not very common, only a few species of shrubs are available in the island.

Floristic diversity has its specific value like buildings materials, raw material for industries, food, fuel, fodder, soil binders and medicine. Medicinal plants commonly used by local inhabitants found in the island are like -Vedailota, Mahanim, Narashingha, Bet, Sorumanimuni, Bormanimuni, Silikha, Arjun, Bhomora, Dron, Amlokhi, Modhuriam, Athiakol, Bonjaluk, Bhutmala, Suklati, Aakon, Dhutura, etc.
