Medicinal Plant
From ancient times Majuli is famous for its traditional knowledge, beliefs and practices related to prevention of diseases. The indigenous systems of medicines have taken their place in our culture long back. Local people of Majuli know about such indigenous system and have done much work on their applications that probably no other medical culture in the world has as extensive detailed and deep understanding about the medical value of plants. The soil and climatic conditions of Majuli make the island ideal for the growth of medicinal plants and herbs strengthening heritage of traditional system of medicines. Thousands of medicinal plants and herbs are found growing wild, which have been used by traditional practitioners in tribal area and other village communities. But it is a matter of regret that so important medicinal plants and herbs are becoming rare and threatened due to the ignorance of the general people. Natural calamities every year, especially recurrent flood, have reduced its geographical dimension for which some important medicinal plants and herbs are becoming lesser day by day. So, it is high time to identify and conserve these sources before they are lost forever from the earth.
